Following on from last year’s event in Manchester, Room151 are bringing LGPS North back to York. This time we are headed to the The Grand Hotel for another half-day of deep discussion and quality networking. Expect quality gastronomy and insight into key investment and asset allocation themes in a setting and format conducive to generating real insights beyond the headlines.

It was a highly informative session, ideally located for LGPS investors in the North of England. Great range of asset managers, pool representatives, advisors, and LGPS peers.

I thought it was a great venue, really good opportunity to network with some good speakers. I liked the fact that it was a smaller more focused regional conference, gave an opportunity to hear views from a different set of people.

head of LGPS, Redington

Very enjoyable event with a good range of topics covered. Great to hear the range of views across the various panel sessions. Great networking opportunity.

Lead sponsor keynote: The training wheels are off; Private Credit's first test is showing the benefits of diversification in action

Private credit has been all over the news lately, with many private credit portfolios built for a different market regime. LGPS are significantly increasing private credit allocations, with combined private debt and multi-asset credit (MAC) holdings exceeding £16bn by 2024, driven by a search for yield and income.

Whilst private debt has become a key component of alternative allocations, with significant growth in direct lending, real asset-backed securities, and distressed debt strategies, key questions need to be asked to assess Private Credit risks and while maintaining strong alignment with long‑term institutional objectives.

Strategic investment decisions in the age of pooling - what does the future hold?

The increased emphasis placed on pools delivering a full advisory and investment service for partner funds is undoubtedly one of the biggest changes the LGPS has gone through in its history.

How will the relationship between funds and pools evolve? What role will asset managers play?

What does this new scale mean for investment strategies going forward? Will certain strategies gain prominence at the expense of others?

How will the role investment consultants and independent advisors evolve? Ultimately, what will an ideal state look like that makes the LGPS fit for the future?

Scaling up local: can the LGPS move from allocation to transformation?

Many LGPS funds have made commitments to local or regional strategies, but allocations remain modest relative to total assets.

How will pooling influence the local investment agenda going forward?

What role should central government play in supporting this?

Are return expectations aligned with regional development realities?

How can local authorities and the LGPS work with managers to deliver impactful and economically sound investment in, for example, regeneration, housing or SME lending?

Cashflow negative: is income now the primary objective for LGPS?

As more LGPS funds move into cashflow negative territory and reduced contribution rates become widespread, income generation is rising up the agenda. This raises many questions at pool and fund level.

Should income targets be explicit within strategic asset allocation?

Is the LGPS well-served by looking at cashflow-driven investment strategies?

What does the optimal mix of income generating assets look like?

Has sustainable investing been derailed by AI and geopolitics?

In this conversational session Ian Simm will explore the impact AI and geopolitics has had on sustainable investing. Will sustainable investing as a concept survive, disappear or evolve and what does this means for LGPS investors?

Active vs passive in 2026: is the equities cycle finally turning?

After a decade dominated by index strategies and mega-cap concentration, shifting macro conditions and AI bubble concerns are reshaping the equity landscape. Is this the age of active management or can the LGPS still reap rewards by doing less and are passive investors implicitly taking active bets?

Will regional strategies see a resurgence?

Will equities take on a new role for the LGPS as private markets allocations remain high?

And how and should you anticipate the economy of tomorrow?

Commodities for the LGPS - time for a rethink?

Commodities as and asset class has been in the financial news recently with gold and silver in particular enjoying fantastic price rises, but is this an asset class suited to the LGPS and if so how should you access it? Through the commodities themselves or by increased exposure to the producers?

Would soft commodities like foodstuffs hold a place in LGPS portfolios or will that cause undue reputational risk for volatile returns?
