From accumulation to decumulation – will the investment model change?

For a long time decade, DC investment design has focused on a single objective: maximising pot size at retirement. That model is now being fundamentally challenged. As pension pots grow, regulation evolves and providers prepare for default retirement solutions, the next challenge is delivering sustainable income through retirement.

How will competing models like CDC, flex and fix, insurance-based solutions, deferred annuities and a slew of innovations shape the investment universe? Does the traditional de-risking glide path still make sense in world where growth is needed for longer?

What are we actually solving for? Member outcomes, behaviour and segmentation

What do members actually need from decumulation? As providers move towards guided retirement and default decumulation pathways, understanding member segmentation is becoming increasingly important, from pot size and retirement timing to risk tolerance, spending needs and levels of engagement.

Does the future lie in more personalised approaches, forked glide paths, cohort-based strategies and guided income models. How can the DC community leverage behavioural science, technology and innovations in member communications to influence retirement outcomes, and how do you design an investment strategy that aligns with member behaviour?

Designing the decumulation portfolio – which asset classes are most suitable?

The decumulation portfolio might not necessarily look much different from the accumulation universe and that is probably a good thing, but what asset classes may gain in importance in transition and retirement? We will hear from 3 asset managers on how they view the market, what issues their strategies solve and our panel of scrutineers will interrogate them.

What can we learn from other markets – a global view

Markets like the US, Australia, the Netherlands, and many more have had various experiences with DC and decumulation solutions, but are there any good lessons to draw from around the world and if so, how applicable are they to the UK context
