The DC Asset Allocation Forum brings together chief investment officers, investment directors, trustees and senior decision-makers from defined contribution schemes and master trusts to explore the long-term strategic decisions shaping member outcomes.

As DC schemes mature and the pensions landscape evolves, asset allocation has become increasingly complex. Against a backdrop of market uncertainty, regulatory change and growing expectations around retirement outcomes, investors must balance risk, return, liquidity and cost while building resilient portfolios that can deliver over decades.

This forum will examine the big-picture questions driving investment strategy across both public and private markets. Discussions will cover strategic asset allocation, the role of private markets, portfolio diversification, liquidity management, retirement solutions, and how schemes are adapting to changing member needs and policy priorities. Delegates will also consider how innovation, governance and implementation can support better long-term outcomes without losing sight of value for money.

Through candid, peer-led discussions, attendees will share experiences, debate emerging trends and explore how DC schemes and master trusts can continue to evolve their investment strategies to deliver the best possible outcomes for members.

The DC Portfolio of 2035 - How will today's portfolios need to evolve to deliver better member outcomes?

The traditional DC portfolio is evolving rapidly. As schemes and master trusts grow in scale and retirement solutions become more sophisticated, trustees and investment directors are rethinking how portfolios are built to deliver better long-term outcomes.

This session will explore what the default fund of 2035 could look like. How should schemes balance public and private markets? What level of risk is appropriate? What innovation is needed in the market? Which ideas have the potential to improve member outcomes, rather than simply add complexity and how do the choices we make today shape the approach in the future?

The Next Generation of Retirement Investing

Retirement is the next frontier in DC asset allocation. As schemes move beyond accumulation, many are rethinking how investment strategies can deliver sustainable income while giving members the flexibility they increasingly expect.

This session will explore how retirement investing is evolving, from guided retirement and hyper-personalised pathways to insurance-backed solutions, deferred annuities and lessons learned from other markets. We will also tackled one of the biggest debates facing the industry: is retirement CDC solving the wrong problem? Are policymakers focusing on the right solution, or are there simpler, more flexible approaches that could deliver better outcomes for members?

Private Markets: What comes after the first allocation?

For many DC schemes, the question is no longer whether to invest in private markets, but how those allocations should evolve. As portfolios mature and schemes gain scale, attention is turning from first commitments to portfolio construction, implementation and governance.

We will explore the next stage of the journey. Is private credit becoming the cornerstone of DC private markets allocations? When should schemes move beyond fund-of-funds and consider more specialist mandates, direct investments or internal sourcing? How should schemes think about manager selection, diversification and building portfolios over time?

We will also examine whether secondaries represent an attractive source of opportunities or a new set of risks for long-term investors.

Protecting Purchasing Power - Building inflation-resilient portfolios

The issue of inflation is one that continues to pose a challenge for DC schemes. While equities remain the engine of long-term growth, schemes are increasingly asking how portfolios can better protect members’ purchasing power through different market environments and stages of their journey.

This session will explore the investment toolkit available to DC schemes, from infrastructure and real assets to inflation-linked bonds, commodities and other diversifying strategies. Which assets genuinely provide inflation protection, and which simply add complexity? How should inflation resilience be balanced against liquidity, cost and long-term returns? And, what roles can private markets play in building more robust policies?

UK Investment Beyond Mansion House - Allocation in an age of Manchesterism & PuFins

The debate around UK investment has moved on from Mansion House. Increasingly, the debate centres around the role of public finance institutions – including the British Business Bank and National Wealth Fund – in directing capital towards UK growth, innovation and infrastructure. At the same time, the rise of ‘Manchesterism’ is placing greater emphasis on regional investment and place-based economic development.

What does this mean for DC investors? Can public finance institutions help create investable opportunities that meet objectives of large DC schemes? And, where are the most compelling opportunities, from venture capital and growth equity to infrastructure and regional regeneration?

Scale, VFM and Consolidation: Does bigger actually mean better?

Scale has become one of the defining themes in DC pensions. Regulators and policymakers see larger schemes as the key to lower costs, better governance and broaden investment opportunities. Meanwhile, Value for Money (VFM) reforms are also shaping investment strategies across the market. But is bigger always better for members?

This debate will challenge some of the industry’s biggest assumptions. Does scale genuinely improve member outcomes, or simply make schemes more alike? Will VFM assessments encourage innovation and better investment – or create herding around the same strategies and managers? As consolidation gathers pace, what does it mean for competition, specialist asset managers and the future of innovation?
