Allocating for the transition – making the most of the economy of tomorrow

The transition of the economy to a net zero footing will undoubtedly affect all parts of an investment portfolio, but what will this transition look like across public & private markets? Will this be a debt or equity-led transition? To what extent can portfolio decarbonization drive real-world change? How do institutional investors make the most of the low-carbon economy of tomorrow?

The energy transition – new opportunities and new challenges

The energy transition is fundamental to decarbonising the economy, but what opportunities does this create for institutional investors across generating assets, storage and grid upgrades? How will a renewed global focus on energy security impact the investment case and how do you gain comfort that you’ve backed the right technology and what roadblocks should investors be aware of?

Fireside chat

Steven Penketh, Senior Advisor to the CEO of the Green Finance Institute will join JP, CEO of Elbow Beach for an engaging discussion on how policy, blended finance, and the National Wealth Fund (NWF) can shape the future of investment into the net zero transition.

They will explore the evolving policy landscape and examine how the NWF can help close the UK’s execution gap in infrastructure projects; focusing on blended finance, comparisons with the US Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), and the NWF’s potential to attract private capital by mitigating technology risk. Additionally, the discussion will address the challenges of fragmented capital deployment and the need for a coordinated strategy across capital providers and governments to accelerate the transition to net zero.

Nature-positive investing – biodiversity, carbon credits & natural capital

Investing in nature-based solutions and the incorporation of carbon credit elements into traditional natural capital asset classes such as forestry and agriculture is changing the landscape for investors. So what role will these investments play going forward and what lies in store for carbon and biodiversity credit markets? How can you consider biodiversity across your portfolio and is the regulatory framework fit for purpose?

Decarbonising the Economy for Growth

Corporates know that to remain competitive they need to decarbonise their operations, products and supply chains. All have created Net Zero plans and are beginning to act on their commitments.

This usually starts with the decarbonisation of electricity supply switching to a green provider, but this is just the beginning of their journey to a profitable future.

35% of the CO2 eq reduction we need must come from emerging technologies and a further 40% of cumulative emissions relies on technologies that have not been commercially deployed in mass market applications.

We will take a look at some of these world class emerging technologies and what it will take to commercialise them.

Index-based net zero investing – no more rear view mirror

Index-based investing with a net zero flavour has traditionally been a backward looking exercise with little opportunity to take into account transition plans and understand what the future holds in store. However, with index-based investing set to remain a key part of many investment portfolios there is room for innovation in this space. Yet questions remain around the proliferation of custom indices and the power and role of indices creators in the investment industry. Can physical and transition risks ever be captured in an index-based strategy or is a move to more active management an inevitable step on the journey to net zero?

Stewards of the transition – policy advocacy, asset owner alliances & picking the right targets

Policy advocacy and systems level change is increasingly seen as one of the more effective stewardship tools at the disposal of stretched teams. So how do you do this well? Should you be focusing your energy on the banks enabling emissions or the companies themselves? How do asset owner alliances become more effective and how do we better align stewardship efforts with strategic asset allocation?

Green, blue & sustainability-linked bonds – financing the transition

The sustainability-linked as well as green and blue bond space is becoming more sophisticated and mature as standards are tightened, but how can you make sure you are having a positive impact with your bond portfolio while achieving real returns? What are the key developments in the corporate vs sovereign bond space and how will these types of bonds stack up in a changing interest rate and inflation environment?

Roundtable Information

The UK fund platform market represents billions of pounds of AUM. With individual investors increasingly demanding returns that are environmental and not just financial there is potential for wealth invested in platforms to make an enormous contribution to achieving net zero.

This roundtable will bring together a group of 6-8 senior investment experts from fund management platforms with asset managers to discuss the role that harnessing individual wealth via platforms can have for moving towards a carbon neutral future.

This discussion will be on the record and peer led and aim to explore:

  • How are fund management platforms structuring their sustainable investment offerings?
  • How is consumer demand shaping net zero products within platforms?
  • What are the asset classes, technologies and individual companies that offer the most promising returns both financial and environmental?
  • How do we balance risk and returns within sustainable investment?
  • How do sustainable investment portfolios sit alongside more carbon intensives offerings on platforms?
  • Is there potential for place-based impact investing within fund platforms?

Places are free of charge for senior representatives from fund platforms including CIOS, Heads of Investments, Heads of Sustainable Investments, Heads of Research and Heads of Manger Selection.

*Places are strictly limited and at the discretion of the organisers, if in doubt please contact sally.shaw@netzeroinvestor.net

If you are an asset manager please contact peter.braham@netzeroinvestor.net for details of sponsorship.
