The first rule of manager selection…

Deep understanding of portfolio objectives and the value contributed by each manager. Ideally a manager contributes perfectly across all 3 dimensions -risk, return, and sustainability-, but in practice this typically involves trade-offs across dimensions.

The thing I love about equities is…

You’re not just investing in numbers, but in companies, people, and ideas. It’s a way to participate in broader progress, seeking healthy returns and SDG-alignment where possible.

The thing I like most about the investment sector…

The energy and drive of the people – it’s a space where ideas turn into real progress. And at the same time, I’m contributing to something meaningful: a solid pension for millions of Dutch healthcare and welfare workers.

Why I like venture capital in an institutional portfolio…

You’re investing in companies that are shaping the future – it’s an important part of the economy and society, and an opportunity for measurable impact. At the same time, it comes with higher risk and often less transparency or reporting compared to more mature investments. Balance and expectations are therefore key.

My advice to retail investors…

Always do thorough research and/or obtain professional advice before getting skin in the game. Invest only in opportunities that align with your values, return expectations, and risk tolerance. It’s much better to find this out beforehand than after.
